December 2017

Dear Friends of Earth Island,

Contribute TodayWe’ve been through a lot in our 35 years at Earth Island Institute, but none of us could have predicted how bad it would be facing the Trump administration’s environmental wrecking ball. Every day brings another assault on the Earth and the work that we and our network of activists are engaged in.

President Trump is a climate change denialist whose decision to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Accord makes the US the only country in the world to reject this important agreement. He’s targeting our precious National Monuments, Marine Sanctuaries, and wildlife, while giving free rein to the oil, coal, and other fossil fuel industries. The list of attacks goes on and on.

The good news is that Earth Island Institute is fighting back. Our strength continues to lie in working at the grassroots to solve environmental problems and to challenge those whose policies put our nation and world in environmental jeopardy.

We now sponsor a vibrant network of 79 innovative, activist projects working around the world. It is the largest, most diverse, and most skilled team of established and new and emerging leaders that we’ve ever had. Our project leaders work in communities spanning the globe – protecting sharks and our forests, confronting plastic pollution, helping indigenous leaders to protect their sacred sites, confronting coal, restoring wetlands, greening schools, and getting kids outside into the wilderness, to name just a few. We’ve added eight new projects this year alone. See eii.org/focus for more detail.

On the youth front, we lead through our Brower Youth Awards and New Leaders Initiative to recognize, mentor, and support an incredible youth movement. Earth Island is now widely recognized as running the premier youth environmental awards program in the country. This year’s Brower Youth Award winners exemplify the best of the younger generation’s environmental leaders – poised, thoughtful, fearless, articulate, and outspoken – taking on the environmental challenges we’re facing in our communities throughout our world.

We are also proud that our Earth Island Journal continues to empower action – both in the quarterly print edition and in daily online postings – by turning a spotlight on Trump’s attacks and provide tough investigative news coverage of crucial under-reported environmental issues worldwide that are often ignored by the mainstream press. The Journal serves our movement like no other.

As our valued partner, we hope you can help us be even stronger in the year ahead with a generous end-of-year tax-deductible contribution. It will make a world of difference to our efforts to protect our land, air, water, wildlife, and communities.

We are stepping up our efforts to protect our planet and our communities. We’re rising above fear and isolation. Our unique and powerful “shared resources” model helps us build strength by working together to save our imperiled planet, unafraid to take on the tough battles. Working in community gives us hope and inspiration.

For the new year ahead, we have some important new initiatives. We’ve just launched our new legal arm – Earth Island Advocates – to help us ramp-up our use of legal tools. Earth Island has always undertaken essential legal battles in the past to save wildlife and wild places. But this new effort will help our projects in legal challenges to mounting threats across the environmental arena. A number of our projects’ efforts are ripe for legal action, and we are ready to show how our deep knowledge of environmental issues combined with aggressive legal action can make a huge difference. Stay tuned.

We’re also boosting our efforts to provide support, mentorship, and training to both emerging and seasoned leaders among our projects; supporting new project initiatives that are urgent and responsive; and inspiring people to get involved and take action where they live.

Your year-end gift will help us support a new generation of the most creative and energetic leaders building a more effective and far-reaching environmental movement.

During the past year, as we have intensified our efforts, John Knox has moved into a new role as Executive Director Emeritus. He is actively reaching out to longtime supporters and partners to both talk about where Earth Island is heading and listen carefully about how we can best expand and extend our impact. Please feel free to contact him directly at 510-859-9108 or at johnknox@earthisland.org.

When you give a year-end donation to Earth Island Institute, you provide vital support to an entire network of committed individuals and their projects. You also support a gutsy, efficient, and effective organization that, in the spirit of our founder David Brower, knows how to get things done!

We’re also rated highly as a place where you get a lot of bang for your buck. We have the highest ratings from all the leading charity ratings services, including Charity Navigator, GuideStar, CharityWatch, and the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

On behalf of everyone at Earth Island, we send you our best wishes, and look forward to our continuing partnership in the year ahead.

Thank you so much for your support.
