International Dolphin Safe Monitoring Program |

These agreements pledge tuna companies to abide by the Earth Island international "Dolphin Safe" tuna standards of no encirclement of dolphins or other marine mammals during an entire fishing trip, no accidental deaths or serious injuries of any dolphins, and no use of drift gill nets. This definition of dolphin-safe tuna is both the most scientifically sound and the most widely accepted standard for protection of dolphins and marine life. Companies that maintain such agreements in good standing are included on Earth Island's list of verified "Dolphin Safe" tuna companies. In order to ensure consumers that tuna companies are following the standards for "Dolphin Safe" tuna, cooperating tuna companies provide full access for Earth Island monitors to fishing and processing operations. Earth Island monitors may board all fishing and carrier vessels at any time to observe fishing operations, fish loading/unloading and/or transshipping, or to inspect log books, ship's manifests, mate's receipts, storage areas, interview observers and/or crew members, etc. Earth Island monitors also have access to fishing and carrier vessel landing/transshipment sites (ports, harbors, etc.), cold storage facilities, transport vehicles (freezer trucks, etc.), and any other locations and/or documentation deemed necessary by Earth Island monitors. Earth Island maintains monitors in Thailand, the Philippines, Costa Rica, Mexico, Mauritius, Colombia, Italy, and the Ivory Coast. Monitors in these countries also regularly travel to Indonesia, Japan, mainland China, Ecuador, Venezuela, the Seychelles, Vietnam, and other countries to check on fishing practices. Monitors also often form the nucleus of local marine protection groups in developing nations, where advocates for the Earth are desperately needed.
