Growing Local

Laura Nagle

donated to the city of Berkeley by: Whole Foods Market Berkeley

The idea of creating a more sustainable future can seem overwhelming to one individual person, but we all have the ability to contribute to a sustainable community and society through the choices we make in buying and eating food. Buying local and fresh foods is good for the individual, for the local community, and ultimately, for the World.

In this piece, I have painted fresh, local fruits and vegetables, which create the foundation of a healthy Berkeley and Bay Area community. The vibrantly painted produce reflects the energy that local, healthy food and food systems can bring to the individual and to the community. The UC Berkeley Campanile emerges from the fruits, and transitions to a view of the Bay Bridge. Just above the bay bridge, the cityscape transitions into a landscape, emphasizing the importance of local farm to city to table crops. Above the hills, the orange sun is rising and blossoming, signifying the start of a new, more sustainable future.
